Frequently Asked Question
What is the best age to start training my dog?
You can start training your dog as early as 7-8 weeks old. Early socialization and basic training can set a foundation for good behavior.
How long should each training session be?
Training sessions should be short, around 5-10 minutes, especially for puppies. Consistency and frequency are more important than the length of each session.

Puppy classes are structured training sessions for puppies, typically between 8-16 weeks old, focusing on socialization, basic obedience, and addressing common behavior issues.

You should start training a puppy as early as possible. Because all of my training is private in-home training, we can start a puppy even before they are fully vacinated and able to go out in the world.
How long does it take to train a dog?
This is one of those “it depends” questions. The length of time depends on may factors some of those are the behaviors or skills we are working on, time devoted to training, age of dog, and dogs history to name a few.
Do you offer private training sessions?
Yes. All of my training at this time is private in-home training.
What is the difference between group classes and private training?
There are several differecnes, but the two main ones in my opinion are distraction of a group setting and pace of the class. Dogs are much less distracted alone in their own home, and we are free to work on specific goals or challenges. With private training, teaching moves at the pace of the learner where the group class is on a schedule.
How do you handle aggressive dogs in training?
First we figure out if is a true aggression or a defensive mechanism. If the dog is truly aggressive we then need to determine what is trigering the aggression and if that can be modified with training.
What should I bring to a puppy training class?
no classes at this time
Do you offer training for older dogs?
Yes. All of the training is private so we can build a customized training plan to suit any age. We can work on the specific goals of the owner or challenges of the learner.
Can I attend a class to observe before enrolling my dog?

What are the most important cues to teach my dog for everyday life?
Essential cues include sit, stay, come, leave it, drop it, and heel. These behaviors and body positions improve safety, communication, and overall behavior in various environments.
How do I start teaching a new cue to my dog?
Begin in a quiet environment with minimal distractions. There are three ways to teach something new; luring – move the dog into position by having them follow the reward with their nose. Shaping – using a secondary reinforcer such as a marker or a clicker to shape the behavior in small steps. Capturing – when the dog is doing what you want say the cue and award.
How can I improve my dog's response to commands in distracting environments?
Gradually introduce distractions, starting in a familiar setting and slowly increasing the challenge. Reinforce cues with high-value rewards and remain patient while building focus and reliability.
What should I do if my dog doesn't respond to cues consistently?
Reassess your training approach—ensure consistency, use engaging rewards, and keep sessions short and fun. If needed, revisit basic training steps and gradually increase difficulty.
